Begun in 1991, Untitled is a non-profit collective dedicated to supporting artistic innovation and offering alternative visual arts experiences in the Nashville community. Untitled artists work democratically and cooperatively outside the traditionally conservative gallery scene. The group’s most well known activity is its popular quarterly non-juried, one-night shows that routinely include over 100 artists and attract a thousand or more patrons. The group also convenes weekly networking and organizational meetings each Wednesday that provide an opportunity for artists to meet, share ideas, and support each other in an open and casual environment. Untitled includes artists in all media and at all levels, from those who have never shown their work in public to some of Nashville’s best-known painters, printmakers, photographers and sculptors.
The large crowds Untitled shows attract evidence the diverse nature and longevity of the group. Untitled’s recent shows have included the work of over 120 regional artists–including art faculty, students, and graduates from Watkins College of Art & Design, Belmont University, Vanderbilt University, Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Lipscomb University and Middle Tennessee State University; staff and exhibiting artists from Zeitgeist, Dangenart, TAG Gallery, Twist Gallery, (fov) Gallery, Plowhaus, American Artisan, and independent artists from Nashville, Bowling Green, and the Middle Tennessee region. Untitled seeks new, non-traditional venues for each quarterly show to bring art to new spaces and new audiences. The group’s annual GLOW show, held in July, is a fundraiser featuring luminous and glow-in-the-dark art.
Untitled has recently launched a fully artist-administered grant program to help artists meet unexpected needs or take advantage of unique development opportunities. Untitled also sponsors workshops and education sessions for artists and community members.
